The game does more than just simply portray the struggles that Madeline has to go through with her own self image. Each stage, or chapter, of the game has its own separate purpose in order to correctly understand the struggle that she goes through as she climbs Celeste Mountain. Chapter 6, Reflection, does an especially great job of this. In this chapter, Madeline loses all the progress she has made climbing up the mountain due to Badeline. However, despite this, Madeline chooses to forgive Badeline and accept her, rather than stay angry and continue to blame her for something that wasn't Badeline's fault. The journey through both the literal mountain itself and the mountain that she has to overcome is wonderfully executed. Bonnie Ruberg, a games analyst at the University of Irvine, shares that " To understand the place of video games within society, it is crucial to analyze the ways that these games are talked about, not just the people and stories that these games represent." However, I couldn't disagree more. I believe that the best way to understand the place of video games in society is to understand the story they are trying to present, and the group of people who need this game as a form to spread their struggles. Simply just looking at the way the games are talked about does nothing to understand video games' place in society.
