Challenges to Philanthropy

Social Justice Issues of Today

The need for philanthropy stems from unrest and issues within our society. If there were no problems, there would be no need for any sort of fight to generate change. However, oppression and bigotry are very real entities and the fight to get rid of them is very prevalent.

Black Lives Matter

This movement was started as a hashtag after the acquittal of white gunman George Zimmerman who shot and killed black teenager Trayvon Martin in February 2012. It started as a hashtag but blossomed into a full on movement, with protest demonstrations and appeals to government officials to promote change. More here.

LGBTQ+ Rights Movement

This movement is one that has spanned decades, as the conversation over the rights of non-heterosexual couples and individuals has been highly disputed over the years based on outdated religious and moral principles.

Environment and Climate Change

Whether we like to believe it or not, the planet is warming up and our climate is changing drastically because of it. Scientists believe this is in part because of industrial work and fossil fuels that result from it, which is slowly eating away at the ozone layer. However, others believe that it is not as big of a deal as some make it out to be and therefore put more time and money into these CO2 emitting industries, as they are a boost for the economy.

These are all major Social Justice issues that certain groups are trying to ensure get resolved, but they are not the end. There are a multitude of other problems that Social Justice Warriors and these philanthropic organizations are dedicated to fixing and with that goal come a host of issues.
