Challenges to Philanthropy

Social Justice Nonprofits

Today, thousands of not-for-profit organizations work across America to work towards social justice and equality for all. These nonprofits are dependent on philanthropy.

Above is a map of just a few of the nonprofits in the Cleveland area that strive towards putting an end to the social injustice today. These organization take philanthropic donations and utilize them by educating the public and providing resources and services to those that are unable to attain them on their own. This includes providing forms of healthcare to individuals who cannot afford it, giving legal service at no cost to individuals in need, advocating for expanded rights and better treatment of individuals and finding resources for those who are without.

Social Justice Nonprofits at Work

National Organization for Women

Social justice nonprofits are not just a modern concept. Below is an image of a march organized and funded by the National Organization for Women. The Legal Aid Society

Another nonprofit organization that utilizes philanthropic dollars to ensure social justice is the Legal Aid Society. Their mission, quoted directly from the website of the Legal Aid Society, is to "secure justice and resolve fundamental problems for those who are low income and vulnerable by providing high quality legal services and working for systemic solutions." Without obtaining philanthropic donations, they would not have proper funding in order to hire attorneys that provide the legal services necessary. The next video is a clip from an interview we conducted with Melanie Shakarian, a director at the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland. She explains the goals of the Legal Aid Society, highlighting the fact that each goal they have is rooted in working towards social justice for all individuals. Social injustice is real, and the fight to stop it is vital.

Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood also works to provide services to those that are unable to afford the costs or are otherwise inaccessible. They focus on reproductive healthcare for women. This includes prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, birth control, regular exams made by doctors for women and other services related to birth control. While the organization receives funding from the government, a lot of the funds used come from private donors and other organizations. Many women's only access to any form of healthcare is through Planned Parenthood, meaning this philanthropic support is vital. Learn more about this organization and the services they offer here

Task Force for Global Health

The Task Force for Global Health works on an international scale to help those in need and without healthcare, often in third world countries. They work on finding vaccines, developing treatments to tropical and deadly diseases, advancing these nations even further and many other issues that are found to plague the disadvantage internationally. This is only a snapshot into the world of social justice nonprofits. The needs for social justice today are seemingly endless and while the nonprofits working to solve these issues seem abundant, the philanthropy is not. The sole hope these organizations have to solve our issues and injustice of today is by receiving donations from those that support their missions. These nonprofits can no longer work alone, social justice nonprofits require one thing: society working alongside them.
