This is the beginning scene of the game, but it packs a staggering amount of attention to detail. This is only the first frame before a timelapse of the house culminating trash, dirty clothes, used cutlery, and stains across the floorboard. Meanwhile, the man remains asleep in the same spot whlie days pass by. This illustrates his isolation and neglectful lifestyle, possibly reflecting his state of mind and the challenges he faces. There is only one portrait anywhere in the house, which is his dog (shown above the character's head). This could mirror the character's attachment to the only companion in his life. After the timeline is finished, there are many items in frame that are interactable, acting as a method of immersion. Murray explains this in their own words, "...the screen itself is a reassuring fourth wall, and the controller (mouse or joystick or dataglove) is the threshold object that takes you in and leads you out of the experience" (Murray). The rich environment that serves as a powerful introduction into Kiddo's life helps the player in their immersion. Details such as a mouse living under his couch, moldy cheese in his fridge, and a shaky microwave each add into the authetnicity of Kiddo's world, but it also invites players ot explore and uncover the nuanced layers of the narrative. It serves as a sort of emotional connection, drawing in players into a compelling and thought-provoking gaming experience.
