Isolation

Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy

Getting Over It, With Bennett Foddy is an interactive platformer game available on mac and windows. The premise of the game is relatively simple: the player uses a hammer as a hook to climb up a mountain of obstacles while the narrator, Bennett Foddy, pokes and prods at the player. While strange and relatively simple compared to other platformers, Getting Over It is infamous for being difficult and frustrating to play. While “mainstream game design has moved toward minimizing these down times, adding mechanics like fast travel or quest markers to get players straight to the next point of interest, another filing away of the adventure game’s rough corners.” Reed et al. Getting Over It makes movement through the game its main goal and obstacle. Intentionally awkward obstacle placement and Foddy’s half philosophical half mocking comments make Getting Over It as much a test of one’s willpower and frustration as it is a test of one’s platforming skill. In this, Getting Over It is a metaphor for the struggle of life in isolation.
