1. “You cannot become better than someone else at a walking simulator, and this lack of a mechanism for dividing elite from noob might be what’s really behind some critiques complaining about the lack of gameplay.” (121)

Most modern games typically filled with constant actions and objectives, which require the player to apply their mechanical skills. While in these games development of mechanical skills determines success, “You cannot become better than someone else at a walking simulator, and this lack of a mechanism for dividing elite from noob might be what’s really behind some critiques complaining about the lack of gameplay” (Reed et al, 121).  In walking simulators, you are not able to become better at these games just by skill, rather you are required to just absorb the environment around you. The lack of a range of machinal skill in in the game divides critics on what merits they should judge it. The lack of competition between players in any given game allows the players to focus on the story and it's nuanced details, rather than developing their mechanical skills.
