Death Star Fungus

SEM utilizes electron beams to view high definition organisms of microscopic size. This picture shows the fungal pathogen, Candida auris, treated with a novel antifungal I was testing. C. auris has a 30-70% mortality rate and displays high levels of antifungal resistance, so new treatments are needed. This picture is the first visual evidence of the effect of this new antifungal, which punched a hole in the cell wall, leading to a Star Wars "Death Star" looking cell.2024-02-06T21:30:27+00:0002Rachael GowenCase Western Reserve UniversityJulia Teran9aca9c408841ff28b321d7128a1e5c918a151e1d
