Scalar Workbook AIQS 120

Group 1

1. Is "Gone Home" an effective queer story?  - We said no, Sam and Lonnie's relationship would have lead to the same issues presented in the game if the relationship was heterosexual. Reed, Murray, Salter bring this up as well, discussing how the external point of view causes the player to feel like an outsider to the queer narrative and view Sam's queerness as yet one more part of the family's scandal (134).

2. Walking simulators require a higher degree of care when designing, because the player is going to be exploring them slowly and contemplating their environment. Compare this to a first person shooter game, like "Doom", which could take more shortcuts in its level design, as players would be focused on the enemies and combat (124-125).
