Discovery and Exploration

Seedship Introduction

Seedship by John Ayliff is a Twine based game published in January, 2018 that is centered around a futuristic scenario in which Earth has died and humanity has built an AI controlled ship that holds survivors in hibernation and has tasked it to search for a suitable replacement world. The player acts as the AI, and must make tough decisions (like choosing to keep vital scanners that would prevent asteroid collisions and a small chance of killing everyone, or sacrificing a few people and saving everyone else). While it is seemingly quite simple, it is quite thought provoking, raising ethical and moral questions about what is more important: preserving the lives of the few or the many, and questioning whether AI should be able to make that decision. This game presents multiple different forms of discovery, including actual discovery of new worlds, as well as self-discovery of the player’s own personal beliefs and morals.

The player is presented with AI generated “planets” with different attributes, and must decide whether to settle there or not. As the game progresses, different things go wrong with the ship and the player must decide what elements of the ship to sacrifice. It is completely text based, but does have some visual elements in the form of different colors.
