Integrating Quotations Practice Group 1
When analyzing the reason for criticism of walking simulators by gatekeepers, Reed et al. explains that walking simulators give no advantage to more experienced players (121). They write that "You cannot become better than someone else at a walking simulator, and this lack of a mechanism for dividing elite from noob might be what’s really behind some critiques complaining about the lack of gameplay” (121). Through this quote, they explain how this "lack of mechanism for dividing elite from noob" causes some players to criticize walking simulators for a "lack of gameplay". However, walking simulators also provide time to reflect, which add to the gameplay by allowing players to recognize more things about the game they might not have before. Therefore, walking simulators are able to overcome this "lack of gameplay" by offering players time to reflect, although, they still receive criticism from few players for the lack of elitism available in other games.
