Robert Marrone Shallow Grave 2020 48" x 36" Mixed media on canvas
I remember the photos of the graves of the four churchwomen, buried in shallow graves. It reminded me that the effects of all acts of injustice are buried just below the surface. The horrors of systemic racism, prejudice, poverty and exclusion can be easily seen if we only go slightly below the surface. The work of justice is to reveal what we choose not to see. In this work the spirits of the murdered women hover over the thin remnants of their burial, calling us to resist the temptation not to see what lies beneath the surface.
