Over the past years the responses to social injustice issues present in American society have not only developed among its population (shown by movements and changes in social norms) but also among the nonprofit sector. The increase in acceptance of individuals outside of the ideal "American society" expands NPOs' ability to help the oppressed. NPOs, like the rest of society in the early days of social reform, fell into a cloud of conformative behaviors leading to not much representation among he unequal groups in society. Today, nonprofits play a vital role in combating these controversial behaviors surrounding social justice as they not only organize campaigns and fund programs, but also create a community in which individuals feel safe, seen, and want to participate in the development of social reform. Overall the views individuals have on race, sexuality, and immigration have changed to become more inclusive for all, though we still have ways to go in terms of legislation and other programs. As such, nonprofits have the power to bring about this much needed push for change.
