Controversies in Philanthropy: FSSO 119-100 Fall 2021

Ineffective vs. Effective Philanthropy

Throughout the chapter we have discussed how different aspects of NGO management and planning ensures lasting impact. Factors like sustainability, fund management, and working with the locality are all important to successfully operate NGOs in the developing world.
It is important to address these issues in developing country philanthropy in order to diminish the barrier between the Global North and South. There has been a long history of the North ( United States, Europe, Canada, and Russia) taking resources from the Global South (South America, much of Asia, and Africa). The goal of philanthropy of the North in developing countries is to develop the infrastructure in the Global South. The best way to maximize NGO efficacy is to adhere to what makes philanthropy effective.

Balancing the goals of working with locality, sustainability, and fund management is an important task that NGOs must undertake. Below are how the charities mentioned in the chapter measure up in the three different categories.

Despite the complications and controversies regarding philanthropy, it is quintessential to our democracy and goal towards global development. While there will always be complex challenges that nonprofit organizations face, they can ultimately succeed by balancing sustainability, management of funds, and involving the local community.
