Nonprofits dedicated to immigration often have four areas of focus: changing legislation, employment, education, and essential services. Controversies in immigration arise when considering what forms of immigration are considered illegal, and the perceived harms of allowing many immigrants into the U.S. without restriction, vs the severe dangers that many restrictions impose on such immigrants, especially potential refugees. These controversies lead to fighting pertaining to legislation, whether to make it harder for immigrants to legally immigrate to the United States or easier to do so, fighting involving employment, whether they deserve to find jobs in a country that is not necessarily theirs, and fighting over their rights to education and healthcareResources and Projects of Interest for Immigration:
ACLU -- Immigrant Rights: the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project works toward “expanding and enforcing the civil liberties and civil rights of immigrants and to combating public and private discrimination against them.” They use litigation, advocacy, and public outreach to achieve this goal. They also are involved in many other issues such as LGBTQ rights, Women's rights, Voting rights, and Disability rights.
Catholic Charities -- Refugee and Immigration Services Catholic Charities -- Refugee and Immigration Services: A faith-based organization, Catholic Charities, driving to serve “our most vulnerable neighbors each year, regardless of religion, race, gender, age, disability, or ethnicity” in Massachusetts, is also involved in improving the lives of immigrants, specifically refugees, by providing them with “a modest apartment furnished with basic necessities; and assisted with acculturation, job placement services and English language training.” They are dedicated towards helping immigrants through education, employment, and housing.
Cabrini Immigrant Services Cabrini Immigrant Services: Another faith-based organization, Carbini Immigrant services strives to provide essential services to immigrants in the spirit of Mother Cabrini, patron saint of immigrants. They contribute a wide range of legal and social services, including uniting families, protecting the vulnerable including children and victims of domestic violence, helping members access benefits such as healthcare and food stamps. Their main areas of focus are thus healthcare and other essential services.

Federation of American Immigration Reform Federation of American Immigration Reform: FAIR states they are a non-partisan, public interest organization that “evaluates policies, seeking out solutions that help reduce the negative impact of uncontrolled immigration on the nation’s security, economy, workforce, education, healthcare and environment.” They believe in reducing legal immigration levels from over one million currently to 300,000 a year. They are affiliated with a legal organization Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) devoted to the same goals, thus they focus on changing legislation and educating the public on their beliefs on immigration and its drawbacks.
Negative Population Growth Negative Population Growth: NPG uses statistics concerning population growth, climate change, and sustainability to support their belief that illegal immigration should be reduced. Their objectives include finding an “optimum population” through document the harm humans inflict on themselves and the environment, suggesting policies on migration and human fertility to achieve this population, influence legislation, and fight against policies that lead to population growth, such as immigration.

They strive to educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences.
