It gives reader a sense of environment immersion about the travel of Satrapi's family, because the elements around figures are all related what they experienced and visited in Europe. Otherwise, it was a delicate time before the Iranian situation turned to worse. There were a lot of uncertain factors over everyone, the new government had just enacted a series of tough law against basic freedom of Iranian citizens. People felt suppressed and didn’t know what would happen to them next. In addition, Satrapi's family planned this trip as the probable last trip under the extremist religion regime that they predicted that these kinds of trips may not be permitted by government in the future. That's could be a reason why many arcs that symbolize mystery fill the blank part in the layout.
