Incoherence Introduction

"Incoherence" is a psychological, emotional game on the platform Windows by Nivan Hedinger, published on November 15th, 2023, in the genre of interactive fiction, that explores the struggles that the main character, Kate, deals with after the loss of her sister. The game tells the story through Kate's eyes; the player mostly explores her dark and gloomy hotel room, leaving it to attend a meeting with her therapist in a hotel room down the hall and to explore an abandoned hallway in the hospital, likely generated by her imagination. The player navigates through the digital space by moving their cursor around their environment and clicking on objects to figure out what they mean or, if something is written on them, what they say. The player does not get to make any choices between any paths in this game--it is purely a walking simulator game.

Similar to "It Paints Me," "Incoherence" is also about grief and the loss of a loved one, with whom the player had a dysfunctional relationship. Kate struggles to get the thought of her head that she caused her sister's suicide. Like Sam, she goes down a path of self-discovery by confronting her fears, a journey that affects the next steps that she takes with her life. As she feels more and more responsible for her sisters' death, it becomes harder for her to recover mentally from her emotional trauma.
