‘Social justice philanthropy is the granting of philanthropic contributions to [non-governmental] organizations … that work for structural change in order to increase the opportunity of those who are least well off politically, economically, and socially.’ -2005 Foundation Center, Social Justice Grantmaking: a report on foundation trends
It is also in place so that people who are more well-off can use their resources in order to aid others who are not as well-off. Philanthropy is a beautiful thing that shows the true decency in the populace--it is an acknowledgment of privilege and utilizing it to better the world.
Above is just one example of many charitable organizations within this sector and what the true meaning of Social Justice Philanthropy is.
Throughout this chapter, we will be comparing the issues faced by social justice philanthropy today and from the past. If we applied what we learned from the challenges of the historical examples to today's, we would be better equipped in fighting the rampant injustices that have plagued our nations for generations. Social injustice will always be an issue, but the way in which we approach these injustices can change--let's try and change it for the better.
