Case School: The Evolving History

Case Main

Case Main opened in September 1885 and it was the first building to host students at its new location in University Circle. Prof. Eisenmann designed the three stories building that had a full basement and a huge attic which later became the 4th floor gymnasium. At the time, the first two floors were available for classrooms while the top two floors were still under construction. The building on Rockwell was maintained as business headquarters until Cleveland's advancing Mall Plan.

With a new building, the school was looking forward to expand even more. In 1885, five of the first students graduate from Case School of Applied Sciences with degrees in civil engineering. These five graduates are the founders of the Case Alumni Association.

In 1886, Cady Staley joined Case School as its first President. At that time, Case had 44 students and 7 teachers and had four Courses of Study (tracks): Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Mathematics and Astronomy, Physics.

In 1886, Case Alumni Association was formalized, with first president Daniel R Warmington ('85), Morris S. Towson ('86) as vice-president, William E. Saunders ('86) as secretary, and Edgar E. Stark ('86) as treasurer. Case Alumni Association voted its Constitution and badge in 1887.
