Case School: The Evolving History

Case Main Reconstruction

Reconstruction of the building started immediately. First two floors were restored by 1888 which allowed for classes to resume in the building. Third floor was restored in 1890 and the fourth floor was restored in 1890. The attic was eventually converted into a fourth floor becoming the Case gymnasium. The original tall tower was never reconstructed. For safety reasons, a new frame building started to be built for Chemistry south of Case Main and finished in 1892. [The frame building was separate from the 1892 stone chemistry building. Here is the building page for the Chemical Laboratory, 1887: https://case.edu/its/archives/Buildings/chelab1887.htm. Helen will work on this text]

During his tenure at Case between 1886-1902, President Cady Staley responded to the changes in engineering education by adding mechanical (1886), mining (1887), and electrical (1892) departments.
