The 20th Century: Age of Advertising

At the turn of the century, the many women's suffrage organizations turned to image management as a major tool for their campaign. They stopped relying on stump speeches and turned instead to parades and tableau. They distributed cards and valentines, sold matching clothing and sashes, and ran publicity stunts. The National Women's Party even risked their lives for sympathy; hunger striking when imprisioned for picketing. These many forms of advertisement brough suffrage to the front pages of newspapers and to the forefront of people's minds, even while some of them purposely excluded black and working class women.
