They stopped relying on speaking tours and conventions and turned instead to parades and tableaus. They distributed cards and valentines, sold matching clothing and sashes, and ran publicity stunts. The National Women's Party even risked their lives for sympathy: hunger striking when imprisoned for picketing. These many forms of advertisement brought suffrage to the front pages of newspapers and to the forefront of people's minds, even while some of them purposely excluded black women.
