In Pursuit of Equity: The Ongoing Struggle for the Equal Rights Amendment

The Equal Rights Amendment In The Present Day

The fight to reach the required 38 states threshold to ratify the ERA gathered steam in recent years as protesters and activists pushed state legislatures to ratify the Amendment. Nevada and Illinois ratified the ERA in 2017 and 2018, and on January 15, 2020, the state of Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the amendment. However, although the ERA has reached the required 38 states, the proposed amendment still lies in limbo as five states have voted to rescind their approval of the amendment. Additionally, Virginia ratified the amendment way past the deadline Congress had put in place for the Equal Rights Amendment.

Above is the present day map of where each state stands on the Equal Rights Amendment. Five states have voted to rescind their votes for the amendment, while several have not voted to ratify the amendment. Take a look at the map and identify if your state has not approved the amendment. With a spirit of optimism and civil duty, contact your respective representative and let them know your opinions on the Equal Rights Amendment.
