The Human Footprint on the Environment

It's All Connected

Throughout the game, the player's decisions affect not only the temperature, but the state of the economy and international relations. This emphasizes how interconnected climate change is to every aspect of our lives. In "The Greens' Dilemma: Building Tomorrow's Climate Infrastructure Today," authors J.B. Rukhl and James Salzman outline how the actions required to create long-lasting change fast "are interdependent and thus [changes in all fields] must [happen] simulatenously and with system-wide coordination" (Rukhl and Salzman 19). Here, the authors explain that to make genuine progress towards a goal such as a Net-Zero America, it is absolutely necessary that society considers making changes in every aspect. As briefly described in the "Important Decisions" exhibit, the player's choices have a tremendous impact on countless factors, many of which aren't even fully acknowledged. These factors are connected on several levels; for example, if the only consideration made is to increase the use of clean energy, this can unintentionally ignore job security that comes from unclean energy companies, such as within the fracking industry. The game makes the point that it is so crucial that every part of society works together to improve the environment, or the results will not make a significant difference. (Sapna)
