The Human Footprint on the Environment

A Game of Chance

The concept of the game, as shown in Figure 4, revolves around the fact that "[s]ea levels will continue to rise no matter what we do." The fact that the amount the sea level will rise is being left up to chance signifies how destructive humanity has become. It's at the point where our actions are going to catch up to us at one point or another, and it's just a waiting game of chance until it does. This game focuses on accepting the issues and making the best out of the current situation. Bethany Sollereder, a research fellow and scientist, dives into the concept of an "ecological tourniquet" in her paper, explaining that our best solutions will act as a tourniquet to the ecosystem, doing its best to rectify the damage and move forward (Sollereder 9). This game supports the concept of pushing through the destruction towards a better future. The greenhouse gas emissions described in Figure 4 are within our control, but this is not what the game is about. Instead, the concept is designed to deal with the consequences of those emissions. My Coastal Futures asserts that humanity should turn its attention towards making do with the world we created and trying to improve it.
