Reed et al. describes how Building Stories, a popular graphic novel, has influenced Gone Home as seen "in the similar fragmentation of stories into disparate parts that must be pieced together, making similar demands on the reader/player to construct identities and narratives out of competing (and even conflicting) perspectives” (131). In this comment, Reed et al. explains the emerging structure of walking simulators and how they differ from that of a typical first person game. Rather than focusing on an action-based gameplay with instant reward, these walking simulators force the player to observe and collect information to unveil the storyline. In a game like Gone Home, where the creator intends to share the perspective of a young queer teenager in a hostile environment, slowing down the game encourages the player to truly understand the actual storyline
