Occupy Archive Digital Exhibits: Spring 2020 CWRU

Logo Symbolism

The logo chosen for the program is of particular interest. A hummingbird depicted in a Victorian art style has an early 20th century gramophone on its beak. The hummingbird can be seen as symbolic of the subsets of the Occupy movement concerned with environmental issues, and the gramophone can be realized as a softer rendition of megaphones commonly used in protests and demonstrations. The overall image is one of delicateness, countering the often radical and ‘harsh’ techniques used by protestors.
