How to Handle Special Collections and Archival Materials

Visit the Hatch Reading Room

Kelvin Smith Library's Special Collections consist of distinctive and unique materials which require special storage, care, and handling, and must be used in our reading room.

The Henry R. Hatch reading room, on the second floor of the library, is set aside for use of these materials under the helpful supervision of our staff.

Library patrons agree to abide by the following rules to help us preserve the collections.

  1. All patrons must provide the required information on this form, and present a photo ID. We will ask each researcher to update her or his information annually.
  2. Materials must be handled with care, according to the instructions given by Special Collections personnel.
  3. Users may not remove material from the reading room.
  4. Food and drink are prohibited.
  5. Pencils are the only writing utensils allowed.
  6. Bags, coats, and other personal items must be stored separately from our materials. We strongly recommend that you do not leave personal items unattended if you leave the reading room.
  7. Patrons may take photographs of materials for private use (without flash). Staff can provide researchers with other reproductions according to the fee schedule.
