How to Handle Special Collections and Archival Materials

Oversized, 3-Dimensional, and Miscellany

Handling oversized materials will most always require the assistance of a reading room staff member.

If the item needs to be moved, either support it fully with a large piece of board or hold it by opposite corners.

Ensure no part of the object is extended beyond the support of your work surface/table.

Rolled items

There are numerous three-dimensional artifacts in our collection.

Nitrile gloves are required to handle these types of artifacts, particularly any inorganic materials such as coins.
Observe the object and take note of any points of stress and handle the item while fully supporting it; some items may be utilized without removing them from their housing.
