  Communism and the American civil rights movement have long been intertwined. This had many consequences. For example, most civil rights leaders were monitored 24/7 by the FBI because of possible communist ties. The connection between these two groups largely comes from shared values, such as equality for all no matter their background or race, as well as a plethora of shared members. Including communists in the civil rights movementforces students and the public to view the movement from an international lens. This is because, as a key tenant of communism is the desire to have the whole world under its banner. There were also many communist movements that were lead by the USSR and the Comintern(an organization that specifically lead the international communist movement). Viewing the civil rights movement as something inherently international is exactly what Nikhil Pal Singh argues in his book Black is a Country. He says "...black activists pursued theirs visions of global transformation...by sharpening the dialectic of race and the nation at home..."(Singh, 132, Ftn. 1). For Singh, viewing the civil rights movement at anything other than international is simply to far from the truth.
  A very international event for the civil rights movement was the Scottsboro case. The event case captured the attention the world  because of the Communist Part of the USA (CP-USA) took the case and up it in the forefront of international attention. James A. Miller, Susan D. Pennybacker and Eve Rosenhaft argue in their article Mother Ada Wright and the International Campaign to Free the Scottsboro Boys that the communist used mother Ada Wright(the mother of one the boys involved in the case) to create that international attention but they did it a way that suppressed black autonomy. The communist constantly played up stereotypes for sympathy as well as having "White activists dictated to blacks, using them when they wanted them, discarding them when they did not"(Miller et Al., Ftn. 2). Yet this was all done in spite of the fact that the communist party was trying to show the boys as equals.There was another case that gained similar notoriety to the Scottsboro case this case also relied on that communist ties but lacked the suppression of black autonomy: the Herndon Case.
  The case started when a young communist was trying to organize workers in Georgia when he was arrested for attempted insurrection. He fought the accusation all the way to the supreme court wit the help of the communist party of the USA. Herndon with this trial used it for the benefit of the party publishing You Can Not Kill The Working Class with the goal of educating northerners to life in the south. 
  
  In his writing we see him rise through the ranks to lead the protest that eventually got him arrested. You see him thrive with in the communist party. We also see in the media much more flattering images of the Herndon. All of this culminates to form a string example as to the prevelaence the communist partty had, as well as the international view Singh heavily emphasizes. Here we see him in his jail cell, however apart from location Herndon retains a distinguished position. He is seated and in a formal pose, there is little in the image that is overtly use gain sympathy, thus emphasizing the idea that blacks should not be pitied or looked down on. instead, this shows a strong sense of pride that demands the respect of all races. this is a stark difference when compared to the Scottsboro case, were the boy were largely framed as helpless.
  The Herndon case demonstrates the black autonomy in full force. He used this case to help himself gain notoriety after the fact and continued to be influential in the civli rights movement. He would go on to write a book, Let me live, about his life and experience. The Herndon case operates in contrasts to the Scottsboro Case, in that the communist party squashed black autonomy. The Herndon case attempts to show the success of black autonomy with in the communist party, but ultimately falls short. 
  
  TEACHING:
  
  Reading the media around both cases shows the differences in the way the communist party approached the two cases. The Herndon case juxtaposed to the Scottboro case allows us to see a difference in the approach of the party. One where the problematic nature of many of their action as well as the beneficial thing it did. Perhaps more importantly we can apply that to the modern day, here we see the difference of 2 methods of supporting a cause. This could be very powerful in teaching about how to approach similar situations in our own lives and making judgements on other groups that might act in similar way to the CPUSA.

  My research process started off with the database of FBI records on civil rights activists, where I was looking at records of Frank Marshall Davis where i saw that he had cited the "Herndon case" as reason for joining the communist party. I had never heard of this case before and was intrigued so I looked it up and immediately found  out about the case. I thought it was interesting as this was very similar to the Scottsboro case except more deliberate and more communist. You see Herndon use his notoriety from the case to launch his carer in the communist party after the case.  I ultimately chose these two specific examples as one shows Herndon's life and why he ultimately joined the communist party as well as life in the south and the picture shows Herdon during his time in jail while he fought the case all the way to the supreme court.

  I arrived at both of these sites trough google. History as a weapon seeks to compile history is order to drive forward progressive ideas by focusing on american resistance history, this does bring into question their bias. Thew site as a whole overtly says it is "leftist" but the site offers a lot of primary sources from the time period. I also don't see their bias affecting the sources due to their minimalist aesthetic but it is important to know they do focus on his communist ties in what they add to the source.  The other source, "Black Then" witch says its goal is to bring to light history of black violence focuses less on the communist ties of Herndon. Instead its focuses on the civil rights implication of the case and Herndon himself. The source focuses on the achievements of black individuals within America, with at strong emphasis on the page "first", referring to "the first black person too..." So the biases I see from this source are more pro-american universalism but focusing on the celebration of culture. 

  The Herdon case has a strong connection to the scottsboro case, they both helped expose the deep injustice in the jim crow south. The two cases differ in the role of the communist party, the key difference being in the scottsboro case the scottsboro boys were not communists but Herdon was.  The 2 cases resulted from very different circumstances as well, one from active demonstration and one from being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Herndon case was more driven by the communist as a direct attack but the start of the scottsboro case rested on the justce system.
