Freedman Fellowship 2023

Freedman Fellows Program

Since 2005, The Freedman Fellows Program, supported by a generous endowment from the Freedman Family, has funded and supported the planning, development, and execution of exploratory digital scholarship projects and instruction.

Take a look at this years Faculty Fellowship Projects and Student Fellowship Projects

Freedman Fellows partner with the Freedman Center for Digital Scholarship Team to advance their project. The team advises recipients on project design, technological needs, and related issues, such as copyright, privacy, and data ethics. The funding model is flexible, providing a pool of funds that can be used to support projects of varying size.  Freedman Fellowship projects are highly varied and come from multiple disciplines, but frequently projects have a strong data component at the heart of their research or teaching question.

You can see in these visualizations that the number of projects each year varies, as do the departments which receive the grants. While the arts and humanities have received the majority of the grants, all the University's Colleges are represented, and each year we make an effort to support a diverse set of projects.

We also have a timeline of projects built using timelinejs that you can explore.  Clicking on a project will provide more detailed information for each fellowship.  (This timeline is a work in progress and will continue to be refined and expanded.)

The program is generously funded by the Freedman Fellows Endowment, established by Samuel B. and Marian K. Freedman. The fellowship program has also included additional funding from other sources, including the College of Arts and Sciences; the Cleveland Health Sciences Library; the Judge Ben C. Green Law Library; and the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences’ Lillian and Milford Harris Library.
