Elaine A. Borawski, PhD, FAAHB is the Angela Bowen Williamson Professor of Community Nutrition in the Departments of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences and Nutrition in the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. She was the founding Director of Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (PRCHN) serving from 2009-2020.
Her project aims to make the Cleveland Food and Tobacco Retail Database, established by the PRCHN in 2012, more available to community partners and research collaborators. The CFTR database contains annual in-store audit information from 2012-2019 on nearly 2000 retail outlets across the city of Cleveland that sell food and/or tobacco, including supermarkets, large and small grocers, cornerstores and convenience stores, gas stations, restaurants, bars and fast food outlets. The audit captures availability and affordability of over 25 specific food items, with specific interest in foods supported by nutrition assistance programs (e.g., WIC, SNAP). It also captures information about prepared or “ready to eat” foods, store characteristics, tobacco availability and advertising. The goal is to make this database more informative, accessible, and user friendly for community organizations, public health officials, and the research community interested in healthy food access in Cleveland.
