Reed et al. maintain that "The game asks the player to confront prejudice without any ability via in-game mechanics to resolve it.” (130) This expands upon the idea that Gone Home is an exploration-based game as opposed to being goal-oriented, since the primary purpose of the simulation is for players to discover why Sam has gone missing instead of trying to find her. While this does not directly contribute to the eerie environment of the game, it offers another aspect of suspense since the ending of the game remains unresolved and so many questions remain unanswered. Players are unable to impact on Sam's fate, acting more as observers of this internal family-centered "horror" story.
