Class Scalar Workbook (Section 119)

Creative Guys in Group 1

Murray tells the reader about the potential of computers and the internet as a way to bring one's thoughts to life, saying that "The enchantment of the computer creates for us a public space that also feels very private and intimate. In psychological terms, computers are liminal objects, located on the threshold between external reality and our own minds. Narrative is also a threshold experience." (99). Exploring the internet gives a sense of both public interaction and intimacy, with a person being able to talk to the rest of the world while at the same time being anonymous and having the ability to be personal without fear of their identity being exposed(mostly). Computers can act as this sort of bridge between a person's imagination and real life, allowing people to actually view what they're thinking about on a screen in front of them. Murray finishes by describing how storytelling, or narratives also act as this kind of experience, as different stories can bring people's imaginations to life.

This image portrays how the internet isolates users with feelings of individualism, while also giving them a sense of publicity with others.
