The recent social justice movements, specifically the BLM movement, drew attention to the lack of diversity, inclusion, and deep rooted inequities prevalent within educational institutions. In some ways, this recent rise in awareness allowed many education nonprofits, especially those who work with students from diverse backgrounds, to build their donor base. However, in other ways, many donors and companies preferred to donate to organizations with more immediate goals in terms of fighting racism as opposed to educational nonprofits, which have more long term goals.
How has the BLM movement affected fundraising efforts and/or donors?
"I think that any organization goes through these cycles, where their mission at sometimes is like the hot and sexy thing that funders and companies are getting behind and sometimes isn't...right now, like, college access is not the most pressing need in our country."
"So it's, it's kind of cut both ways. I think it ultimately comes down to like, fundraising is always about this, what does the donor really care about? And how does it make them feel to be involved with it?"
NAACP: Education
In the past few months, due to the spread of the BLM movement, the NAACP received an overwhelming volume of donations. The NAACP emphasizes the importance of education, and these donations were used for the following:
1. Increase Resource Equity
2. Provide Scholarships
3. Ensure College Readiness
4. Keep Students in School
5. Improve Teaching in Underserved Communities
