Recent Social Justice Movement's Effects on Education
Recent social justice movements, specifically the Black Lives Matter movement, have put pressure on communities and schools to acknowledge the racism and xenophobia that is deep-rooted within them. The movement has forced institutions to reflect upon their practices, sparked conversations regarding racial justice, and encouraged individuals to listen to other’s experiences.
“My daughter has shed too many tears and my heart aches for her. Imagine you're just walking down the hall trying to get to your next class. And a six foot two boy white boy in passing leans down to you and whispers [the N word] in your ear. This was last year. My daughter graduated in 2019.”
Due to bold individuals who stood up and the unconditional support from their communities, schools were forced to:
- Redesign their Curriculum
- Make the Environment More Inclusive
- Address Racism on Campus
