Mather Dormitory Self-Government Association
In 1914, several dormitory girls decided that self-government was needed in order to overcome several of the evils then prevalent. They broached the subject to the dean and she was very willing to be won over to their side. However, when the plan was told to the dormitory girls as a whole, they objected...They said, "If we make the rules, we'll have to obey them, whereas now we can skip out if we want to." They were soon convinced of the error of their principle, however, and so self-government in the dormitories came into existence.

House counselors help to develop programming, and to build a positive residence hall identity and foster pride in and caring for the quality of living available in the House...each residence hall may form its own governing body. The house government determines and maintains standards of conduct, plans social events for the dormitory, and works with the residence staff to enforce general housing regulations and promote the residence hall as a "living-learning center."
