University AwardsCase Institute of Technology awarded Leutner the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, 1948.
Western Reserve University awarded Leutner the honorary Doctor of Laws, 1950.
The Emily Payne Smith Leutner Memorial Fund was established by President Leutner and family and friends in memory of President Leutner’s wife. The fund was renamed in 1962 the Winfred George and Emily Payne Smith Leutner Memorial Fund. The fund was used to purchase books in the arts and sciences for the University Library, 1955.
Western Reserve University dedicated the north side dining and recreation commons the Winfred George Leutner Commons, “because he upheld the finest traditions of academic freedom, because of his kindly and sympathetic relations with faculty and students,” 1965.

1933 Continuous Campaign was launched. It included annual gifts, capital gifts, and bequests,
and continued throughout Leutner's tenure.
1935 The School of Nursing was renamed the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing of
Western Reserve University.
1936 The Faculties of Arts and Sciences was established. Composed of members of the Adelbert,
Mather, and Graduate School faculties, it acted on matters of common interest.
1939 Countries around the world were plunged into World War II.
1941 Corporate reorganization amalgamated the separate corporations of Western Reserve
University, Case Library, Adelbert College, and Cleveland School of Architecture into
a single corporation. Cleveland College was amalgamated with this corporation in 1942.
The Plant Rehabilitation Fund Campaign was intended to raise $300,000 to replace, repair,
and renovate facilities. The campaign, which raised $134,000, was abandoned after the
attack on Pearl Harbor.
1944 GI Bill of Rights (formally: The Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944) was signed into
law.
1945 The School of Education was closed.
The Department of Education operated until 1979.
1947 First telecast was made by WEWS, Ohio's first television station.
1949 The School of Pharmacy was closed.

1930
William E. Wickenden was inaugurated as Case School of Applied Science's third president.
1931
The College for Women was renamed Flora Stone Mather College in honor of early benefactress, Flora Stone Mather.
1932
Western Reserve University established a chapter of the Society of Sigma Xi, an honorary scientific society.
1933
The Western Reserve University Faculty Club was located at 2035 Adelbert Road.
1934
Winfred G. Leutner was inaugurated as Western Reserve University's eighth president. A graduate of Adelbert College in 1901, he was the only alumnus to serve as president.
1935
Western Reserve University trustees renamed the School of Nursing in honor of U. S. Congresswoman Frances Payne Bolton.
1936
Mather House was converted into a cooperative dormitory for the 1935/1936 academic year. Residents worked about 1 hour per day in exchange for a reduction in the usual dormitory fee.
1937
Trustee Andrew Squire (pictured here) and his wife, Eleanor, willed their property, Squire Valleevue Farm, to Western Reserve University.
1938
The School of Pharmacy maintained a drug garden where they grew plants for medicines at Squire Valleevue Farm.
1939
With the construction of a new addition, Eldred Hall's main use changed from a student union to a theatre. The production of Spook Sonata formally opened the new theatre addition.
